How do Air Purifiers Work!

Air Purifiers are great products but have you ever wondered how they work. Each type of purifier works in a different way because they have different ways they purify. The most common air purifier is the filter based. These are traps that hold the particles from staying airborne. The air is forced through a filter and the particles are captured in the filter. The most common filter is called the HEPA filter. HEPA stands for the High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter. It removes an estimated 99.97 percent of the particles that are at least 0.3 micrometers in size. The particles pass through the air stream and head straight for the filter. The filter is made up of fibers which physically capture the particles.

The Activated Carbon is a material used in purifiers that collect the chemicals on a very small molecular basis. They do not remove the bigger particles. This style of purifier usually works well with other filters that have the ability to capture bigger particles. There are other types of purifiers such as the Photocatalytic Oxidation or PCO. This uses short wave ultraviolet light which hospitals use to sterilize their instruments. It is estimated that this type of purifier can kill up to 99.9 percent of the bacteria and airborne viruses that are floating in the air. While PCO is not really considered air purifying system because they don’t trap particles but they do kill airborne particles with the light.

Air purifiers that are called Ionizer purifiers are different than other purifiers because they use charged electrical needles to create ions which take care of the particles. The Ions adhere themselves to the airborne particles and they are electrostatically drawn to the charged up plate. There are two types of ionic purifiers they are the fanless ionizer and the fan based ionizer. The fanless units use very little power and they don’t make much noise but they are not really as effective as the fan based units.

The Ozone generators create ozone which they are used to create a good amount of ozone which is a potent gas that oxidize other chemicals. They remove smoke and odor from a room. The only problem with Ozone generators is that the ozone that is produced can be harmful to humans and pets and should not be used in a room that other people are using.

No matter which style purifier you choose you really have to do your home work, because if you really did not think about it too much , how many people wouldn’t have know that ozone generators should only be used in rooms that are not being used. It is very important to make a list of air purifiers you would like to check into and also what kind like filters or Ionics. When it comes to cleaning the air you want the best possible product for your home.
